Target Audience

The program is targeted at middle primary students in Grades 3 and 4 but also caters for a wider range of student ages in smaller rural schools.

The Session Content

The MEU is integrated with and complements CFA’s Fire Safe Kids (FSK).
The MEU is set up to resemble a home. Students move through the MEU learning about different aspects of home fire safety in each room of the house focussing on the high risk areas of the kitchen, laundry and lounge room.

Inside the MEU the students will:

  • recognise and explain how to remedy home fire hazards
  • discuss the science behind fire through understanding the fire triangle
  • identify and discuss the dangers of flammable liquids
  • learn personal survival strategies to extinguish clothing fires and to cool burn/scald injuries
  • identify the need to make a home fire escape plan
  • rehearse home fire escape procedures

Outcomes of the MEU:

  • Increasing students’ understanding of fire safety around the home;
  • Promoting fire safety to students in the comfort of their school learning environment;
  • Alerting the community to the need for fire safety at school and home;
  • Alerting the community to CFA’s role in saving life and property;
  • Students are encouraged to take the fire safety messages home and discuss them with family and friends.

Booking the MEU

The MEU travels around Victoria each day of the school term. If you are interested in having the MEU come to your school and to find out when it is your area, contact your local CFA Community Education Coordinator.

The MEU is fully self contained and doesn’t require an external power supply.
Parking Requirements

The MEU is a semi-trailer measuring 17.5m in length, 3.9m in height and 2.5m in width. That is 4 cars long and 1.5 cars wide. It needs a large enough site in your school grounds to park and operate safely (21m by 7m minimum).

NOTE: Alternative parking arrangements may be possible.

Program Design & Curriculum Links

The program is designed to enable students to demonstrate strategies that deal with unsafe or emergency situations. This is strongly aligned to the learning outcomes in the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) and Curriculum Standards Framework II (CSFII). The lesson covers aspects within three key learning areas of Health and Physical Education, SOSE and Science.

At the end of the session teachers will receive a free CD Rom with a range of follow up activities for the classroom.
