Managing trees, grass, shrubs and other vegetation on your land can have both fire safety and environmental benefits.
Clearing vegetatation
- Protect house blocks, sheds and fences by clearing vegetation and weeds to reduce fuel loads ahead of the Fire Danger Period. Strategic grazing, slashing and herbicide can be used for clearing.
- In fenced-off areas, manage weeds and other fuel load, especially if the area is near key assets. Fenced-off areas include rivers or streams that are classified as crown land or riparian areas.
- Around buildings, keep a minimum radius of 10 metres clear of mulch and significant vegetation. If your property is surrounded by dense forest, you may need to clear more than 10 metres. CFA's Home Bushfire Advice Service can help you determine this.
Native vegetation
If your home or assets are located:
Always check with your local council before removing native vegetation. Planning permits are usually needed.
Roadside clearing
Permits are needed for any roadside work other than mowing. VicRoads issue permits for State Roads and Municipal Councils for municipal roads. If unsure, check with your local council.
If you have a permit, you must follow safety requirements and wear high visibility clothing, display signs and managing traffic.
Roadside works are not permitted on days of Total Fire Ban.
